Since 1965, sports fans have gathered in Appleton at the Red Smith Sports Awards for an evening with countless Hall of Famers and national sports celebrities to benefit youth sports in the Fox Valley area. This year's event will bring more of the same - Broadcasting icon Bob Costas will headline the evening, Milwaukee Bucks legend and newly inducted Hall of Famer Sidney Moncrief will receive the Scheels Sports "Nice Guy" Award, and Major League Baseball's most experienced postseason umpire Gerry Davis will receive the Red Smith Award.

Named in honor of Richard “Red” Smith - a local sports hero who played college and professional football and coached professional baseball and football - the Red Smith Sports Awards has raised over $1 million for local youth sports organizations, high school booster clubs, youth sports start-up programs, special project grants, and team traveling grants.
