APPLETON, WI — Grace Schara’s family speaks out after an Outagamie County jury exonerates Ascension St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in a wrongful death lawsuit.
Schara’s family sued the hospital and the doctors that treated the woman with Down Syndrome during the height of the COVID pandemic. The family alleges that Schara was given a lethal cocktail of drugs–and a “do not resuscitate” order was placed on her against the family’s wishes.
Following the verdict, Scott Shara, Grace’s father, voiced his disappointment.
The Schara family plans to hold a news conference on the verdict in the next few days.
An Ascension Wisconsin spokesperson issued a written statement following the verdict.
“The loss of a child is heartbreaking and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family. Throughout this process, we have remained confident in the care provided by our team and in the values that guide our work each day. The health, safety and well-being of our patients, associates and community members is our top priority, and we are committed to honoring human dignity and acting with integrity and compassion for all persons.”
