APPLETON, WI — Appleton’s largest park is sporting a new name that honors all who’ve served in uniform.
Dedication ceremonies were held Thursday morning to officially designate what was previously known as Appleton Memorial Park to Veterans Memorial Park. Veterans from all branches of the military, Patriot Guard members, the Scarlet Guard and elected officials were on hand to celebrate the new name and commemorate fellow service members.
Appleton Mayor Jake Woodford says that early in the long planning process, it was obvious which park should be renamed to salute those who’ve served and continue to serve.
Longtime common council member and former State Treasurer Jack Voight says although the park is dedicated to those who serve, it’s an asset for the entire community.
Lt. Nao Shua Xiong , President of the Wisconsin Hmong-Loa Veterans of America, voiced gratitude for honoring their veterans at the park and aiding their families in starting anew in the U.S.
Previously, Appleton dedicated Veterans Park off of Memorial Drive along the Fox River. That name will remain in place to differentiate the two parks.
