Max Meylor to Harry Ballard III for 37 yards, all of it through the air, a spectacular one-handed touchdown grab that gave the Green Bay Blizzard a lead they would never relinquish, also secured them the #1 spot on ESPN’s “Top 10 plays.” Not a bad Friday night at the Resch Center in Green Bay!
The victory, Green Bay’s fourth consecutive, tying a franchise record, was not easy secured. In fact, when the final whistle blew, the visiting Iowa Barnstormers owned just about every offensive category: total yards (161-106), passing yards (107-82), rushing yards (54-24), 1st downs (18-7), time of possession (39:53-20:07). But statistics can be misleading, and when the clock hits :00, there’s only one that matters, the final score.
The Blizzard defense flexed its league-leading muscles all game. A blocked Iowa field goal attempt and a Cyntell Williams interception of Iowa QB Kyle King both gave Green Bay a short field with which to work, and they took full advantage, cashing in for a pair of touchdowns. A 30-14 halftime cushion for the Blizzard was enough to hold off a second-half push from the Barnstormers, as Green Bay emerged victorious 40-33.
The Blizzard (4-1) will attempt to set a franchise record with a 5th straight victory as they travel to battle the winless Storm of Sioux Falls (0-4) on Friday night.
